Greek Gold Ring and Earring Set with Rosettes

4TH-3RD CENTURY B.C.

7/8 - 1 1/4 in. (14.59 grams total, 22-32 mm).

Comprising: matched pair of earrings, each a hollow-formed disc with applied rosette motif in filigree; finger ring with twisted rod shank and swivel attachment to a drum-shaped bezel with similar applied rosette, granule clusters to the rim. [3]

Provenance

London collection; acquired on the UK art market 1971-1974.

This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by a search certificate number no.12152-217076.

    Important Cypro-Geometric ceramic types include white-painted and bichrome wares, often decorated with geometric motifs and showing inventive shapes; slightly later, a distinctive black-on-red wares was developed on Cyprus, partly as a result of contact with the Levant.

    This possibly represents a bull or bull calf associated with the Apis cult.
