Greek Gold-Foiled Alexander the Great Coin Brooch

CIRCA 3RD CENTURY B.C.

1 1/4 in. (22.03 grams, 33 mm).

Comprising a tetradrachm coin of Alexander III of Macedonia depicting his profile bust right wearing a lion-skin and, to the reverse, Zeus, seated left holding an eagle; set in a surround with hinge and catch affixed to the reverse.

Acquired 1990s-early 2000s.

    Ornamental discs of this type decorated the long dresses of Sarmatian princesses, arranged vertically on long garments, on shawls, and on the upper shoulders. They were fixed to the garments through sewing, using the fastening holes.

    Red burnished-ware pottery became the dominant pottery ware lasting into the Middle Bronze Age on the island of Cyprus. Vessels were handmade and covered with a slip, which was burnished and often decorated with patterns incised with a sharp cutting edge before being fired. Potters were able to produce vessels that were either mottled or painted in two colours, often red outside and black inside and on the exterior of the rim.
