Greek Attic Terracotta Lekythos with Battle Scene

CIRCA 500 B.C.

6 3/4 in. (270 grams, 17.1 cm).

With flared foot, broad shoulder and trumpet-shaped mouth, strap handle to the rear; painted frieze with scene of two warriors fighting on foot with spears, watched by four silhouetted spearmen with pointillé detailing.

    The category of this mirror is similar to those of the Cesnola collection, from Cyprus at the Metropolitan Museum. They consist of heavy circular disks, provided with low cylindrical rims. They were made in pairs, and polished respectively on the recessed and flat sides. The unpolished sides were ornamented with concentric-circle ornaments and concentric mouldings.
