The two scratches in form of a cross on both sides used to display hatred for Elizabeth I by a disgruntled Catholic. Elizabeth’s elder sister, Mary, was a Catholic and this led to the persecution of Protestants during her reign (1554-58). Sixpence coins of Elizabeth I occasionally bear this type of graffiti which may have been executed by Catholics as a protest after the demise of Mary. -
