Bamboo stems and leaves with red-necked Amazon Amazona arausiaca printed on linen with 'Sb' monogram to lower middle; mounted in a glazed wooden frame. [No Reserve]
ProvenanceProperty of an East Anglian gentleman, 1970s-early 2000s.

The red-necked amazon Amazona arausiaca is only found in the Caribbean island of Dominica.

In late 15th century style, showing seated Jesus in the centre, wearing a purple robe and a crown of thorns on his head; surrounded by four armoured men dressed in long tunics, breeches and leggings, two wearing a skullcap; architectural background and Flemish inscription ‘DE KROONING VAN JESUS’ (the coronation of Jesus) in uncial letters; some restoration. 4.5 kg, 65 x 53.5 cm

The scene represents the ‘Mocking of Christ’ from the Gospel of Matthew (27,27.31): ‘Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said’. -
