Framed Medieval Lead Seal Matrix of Sare Daughter of Sare
13TH CENTURY A.D.
6 3/4 x 5 1/8 in. (136 grams, 17 x 13 cm).
Vesica-shaped and fitted with attachment loop, legend in Latin script around a stylised bird, reading 'S. SARE FIL.SARE' i.e. 'SEAL OF SARE DAUGHTER OF SARE', a stylised flower to the reverse. [No Reserve]

FootnotesThe lady of a wealthy family of merchants would have had her own small seal used for sealing her private letters, and the design of the matrix would have reflected this. On the vesica seals the legend around the border usually started at 12 o'clock position with a cross or a star (like here) and the word sigillum (seal) often indicated only by the letter S. Then, normally, the name of the owner and the one of the parent, after the letter F. (FILIUS or FILIA = son or daughter).

Comprising spurs of various sizes; including examples retaining rowels and buckles. 313 grams total, 13.3-15.3 cm
Acquired 1990s-early 2000s. East Anglian private collection.
Early in 16th century, fashion of spurs changed and the spur were fitted with a much shorter, dropped neck, their rowels ranging from medium seven-point to large short seven points. -

Acquired 1990s-early 2000s. East Anglian private collection.
The deep curve of the shoulders, the lack of protrusion above the base of the rowel holder, the short rowel holder and the small diameter rowel are characteristics that point to dating some of this specimens in the 13th century. Kirpichnikov puts these spurs in type V (first half of the 13th-14th century) after a spur depicted on an English tombstone dating to the beginning of the 14th century.
