Showing figures in an opulent courtyard, a man seated against a large cushion massaging one woman's foot, another offering him a drink from a small cup, two further women seated nearby, river meandering through a hilly landscape beyond, text above and below, flowers in the border; mounted in a reveal and a glazed wooden frame. Engraved with figural scenes, animals, floral and foliate motifs, raised roundels with floral motifs inlaid with garnets, floral and foliate openwork lid, thumbpad modelled as a peacock in the round, handle as a stylised sinuous beast with a head at the top and foot, u-section spout. 1.09 kg, 32.5 cm high

Composed of graduated polished beads etched with a white geometric design on both faces; restrung. 16.5 grams, 44 cm long

Etched carnelian beads are characteristic of the Indus Valley culture and have been produced since the third millennium B.C. They are a typical product of the Harappa culture, but they are also attested in later millennia and produced elsewhere in Southeast Asia. The oldest specimens come from the Indus Valley and from Mesopotamia. A few specimens were found in the so-called royal cemetery of Ur, where they were identified in the excavation publication as coming from India. -
