Foot of an Egyptian Mummy
LATE PERIOD, 664-332 B.C.
8 3/8 x 3 5/8 x 4 in. (753 grams total, 21.2 x 9.2 x 10 cm including box).
Preserved left foot from a mummy with bones (calcaneus and navicular) visible at the rear, phalanges; mounted in a sturdy glass display case. [No Reserve]
Provenance
Acquired from a licenced dealer in Cairo, Egypt, prior to 1975.
On loan to Walton Primary School as an educational exhibit circa 2001.
Property of a private collector, Walton on the Naze, UK.

This ancient amulet represents two ostrich feathers or shuty. Interestingly, these feathers were also present on the Atef crown of Osiris, the god of the afterlife and the dead. This suggests the amulet was believed to imbue the wearer with Osiris' divine power and protection. -

The goddess Tawaret was a female hippopotamus with the arms and legs of a lion and the back and tail of a crocodile. Despite her fearsome appearance, Tawaret was a household deity and protector of women in childbirth.
