Etruscan Bronze Bow Brooch with Phallic Pendants

2 3/4 in. (21 grams, 71 mm).
With integral spring and pin, catched formed as a hand, segmented bow with low-relief detailing, five (of seven) short chains with phallic dangles. [No Reserve]

Greek Terracotta Amphora Handle Fragment with Stamp by Manufacturer Satyros for the Magistrate Thrasonos

With rectangular stamp possibly bearing the names 'ΣΑΤΥΡΟ (SATYROS) Θ[ράσωνος] (Thrasonos)', and short handled trident to left. 130 grams, 80 mm
Acquired 1960s-1990s. From the late Alison Barker collection, a retired London barrister.
The legend of the stamp usually comprises three elements, in full or abbreviated form: a) the name of a magistrate whose purpose was to date the amphora. In our case possibly Θράσωνος b) the name of the “fabricant” (manufacturer), who played a part in the production of the amphora (here SATYROS), c) ethnic element indicating the production’s place (maybe, here, associated with the the Θ of Θράσωνος, Knidos). -

Minoan Bronze Statuette of a Lady

In the Dictean Cave in Greece, many votive statuettes of this type were found. The flounced skirt is characteristic of Minoan women's dress, and it was lavishly decorated in folds of different colours. It could be worn with or without a narrow corselet, but in both cases exposing the breast. The exposed breast was connected to the cult of the mother goddess, and fertility, an element here reinforced by the presence of the suckling child.
