Charles I was executed on 30 January 1649 and this shilling was issued in the first year of the Commonwealth, declared under the Rump Parliament on 16 May 1649, under the auspices of that Parliament and a Council of State; it was not until 1653 that the army, under Oliver Cromwell, took control. -
