Egyptian Mixed Scarab Collection

2ND-1ST MILLENNIUM B.C.

3/8 - 3/4 in. (17.4 grams total, 10-20 mm).

Comprising (from left to right and top to bottom): 1) a scarab with an oval border containing the seated figure of a seated deity with arm raised in adoration before the sign partially resembling the hieroglyphic sign for a ‘thousand’, with the water and signs below; 2) a scarab with a faint oval border containing the honey bee and reed leaf symbols; 3) a scarab with an oval border containing the throne name of the 19th Dynasty pharaoh, Ramesses II (User-Maat-Re) atop a neb sign; 4) a scarab with indeterminate signs; 5) a scarab with an oval border containing the falcon god Ra-Horakhty standing atop a neb sign; 6) a scarab inscribed with numerous geometric designs that incorporate the name Amun-Re; 7) a plain scaraboid.     Accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Stamp Seal of Chalcedony/Carnelian 14.5 x 20 x 10 mm. This s a scarab on a flat base, the insect nicely modelled, and the seal design on the flat base is contained within a linear border. It shows a prancing lion above a fallen bull and there is an inscription in the West Semitic alphabet [three characters] l-h-n-n Property of H-n-n. This is a Phoenician seal, exact date not easy to fix but c.800-400 B.C. is the likely range. The seal, which is not pierced, is chipped around the edges but otherwise in very good condition.' 4.76 grams, 20 mm



    Acquired on the German art market, 1989-1995. with The Museum Gallery, 19 Bury Place, London, WC1, UK, 1998-2003. Property of a London based academic, 2003 to present. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by a search certificate number no.12634-233894.     Stephanie Gee was a prominent archaeologist who took part in several expeditions in Egypt. She was a trusted assistant to the British-Australian archaeologist Veronica Seton-Williams, who excavated in Egypt, Britain, and the Near East. Stephanie also took part in the Tell El-Farâ'în expeditions of 1965-1968, and assisted Seton-Williams with preparing the 1966 expedition report. Their collaboration continued and Stephanie helped with the manuscript of Seton-Williams’ book ‘The Road to El-Aguzein’, a narrative account of her life that was first published in 1988.
