Egyptian Faience Bead Necklace String with Wedjat Eyes
LATE PERIOD, 664-332 B.C.
17 1/4 in. (14.1 grams, 44 cm).
Restrung on two parallel strands using mainly annular and tubular beads, enhanced with two pairs of small wedjat eye pendants, one pair with applied black detailing and the other pair with moulded low-relief detailing; with a central, large wedjat eye pendant with low-relief detailing.
Provenance
From the vendor's grandfather's collection, formed in the 1950s; thence by family descent circa 1974.

Cf. Petrie, W.M.F., Amulets. Illustrated by the Egyptian Collection in University College, London, 1914, pl.XXV, no.138ad, for a wedjat eye similar to the central amulet.

Egyptian Janiform Pataikos and Ra-Horakhty Faience Amulet

Modelled in the round, Pataikos depicted nude with his arms resting on his rounded belly, large genitals and a suspension loop on his head; the nude Ra-Horakhty depicted falcon-headed, wearing a sun disc and a tripartite wig, his hand resting on his waist; each standing on stylised crocodiles(?) on a rounded base. 13.4 grams, 60.5 mm

Pataikos amulets were used for protection against negative forces and dangerous animals such as snakes, crocodiles, and scorpions. These amulets also symbolised rejuvenation and were often embellished with solar imagery, as seen in this example which features the sun disc headgear and Ra-Horakhty.
