Eastern Roman Marbled Glass Bottle

4TH-6TH CENTURY A.D.

3 3/4 in. (101 grams, 98 mm high).

A heavy pear-shaped amber-green coloured glass vase with u-shaped neck and everted rim, decorative marbling over the body.

Provenance

Acquired early 1990s.
Ex private American collection; thence by descent.
Private collection since 1998.

    From a collection acquired on the UK art market from various auction houses and collections mostly before 2000. From an important Cambridgeshire estate; thence by descent.

    Roman mosaics were made from small cubes of natural stone and terracotta possibly cut from tile or brick. Each of these small cubes was called a tessera (plural tesserae) from the Latin word for dice.
