Eastern Greek Gold Horse Earrings with Pendants
CIRCA 4TH CENTURY B.C. AND LATER
2 1/4 - 2 1/2 in. (18.08 grams total, 58-64 mm).
Each composed of a pair of bifacial addorsed horse-heads with filigree and granule detailing, filigree loop to each mouth, coil to each forehead, six loops to the underside each with a chain and sheet gold fruit pendant; to each face an inset glass cabochon; one with twisted wire ear hook above; both earrings with ancient chain dangles, one with a replicant horse. ProvenancePreviously acquired on the UK art market between 1978-1980.

Greek Terracotta Attic Black Figure Vessel Fragment Group

Comprising: carinated rim fragment from a bowl with reserved siren, panther, rosette and other ornament; bowl base with reserved advancing nude male or satyr on a red field, sgraffito detailing; skyphos rim fragment with part of the handle, reserved egg-and-dart band. 106 grams total, 7.4-13 cm
From an early 20th century collection. By descent the property of a UK lady. Ian Wilkinson collection, Nottinghamshire, UK, formed since 1985. Accompanied by a previous handwritten note including provenance.
The body of the panther resembles the style of the school of Sophilos, an Attic painter active circa 580-560 B.C. The naked image (a dancing satyr?) recalls the Attic black figure depictions of ithyphallic satyrs, with torso, arms, legs and incision for internal details in white paint, made around 500 B.C. -

With pinched three-lobe mouth and strap handle; threads and details highlighted in purple; decorated scene in square metope comprising two dancing figures, one male and the other female, probably symposiasts; the male naked, holding a stick in his right hand and with the other arm carrying his coat; the female, a hetaera, dancing and running to the right, wearing a long chiton and a coat. 423 grams, 20.3 cm
Acquired in the mid 1980s-1990s. From the family collection of Mr S.A., Switzerland, thence by descent. Private collection since the late 1990s. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by a search certificate number no.12089-218152.
