MIDDLE BRONZE AGE I-II, CIRCA 2000-1750 B.C.

Hemispherical in form with spur to the rim, pierced for attachment; repaired. [No Reserve]
ProvenanceEx Peter Negus collection (1920-2012), a prolific collector who worked in the insurance industry for most of his life.
His wife worked for Coutts Bank for many years and they shared an enormous passion for natural history, geology and archaeology, amassing a collection. He was a member of the Geologists’ Association for over 50 years, acting as Treasurer from 1979 to 1988.
Acquired from Bonhams, London, 26 October 2007, no.354 (part).

Ex P. A., Hertfordshire, UK, specialist collection of Greek art, 1980-1990s.
The black glaze technique uses the same glaze used by the Greeks on the red-figure and black-figure ceramics, but covering the entire piece, without figurative decoration. It was a transparent raw glaze, which took on its characteristic intense, glossy black tone after firing. -

Fragment of a hollow-formed statue of a warrior, the thigh and hip area with painted armour detailing; mounted on a custom-made stand. 535 grams total, 16 cm high (20.5 cm high including stand)

Property of a South Australian private collector, with collection reference 15.10. Accompanied by a copy of a Treasuregate Art of the Ancients certificate of authenticity with ref no.2015-11-22-03. Accompanied by detailed collector's catalogue pages including description and photographs.
The armour on the figure is the short-sleeved chitoniskos which was worn under the cuirass and protected the flexing areas around the groin and buttocks. The figure probably formed part of a frieze on a temple.
