Cypriot 'Eyed' Trefoil-Mouthed Pottery Jug with Geometric Motif
IRON AGE, CIRCA 1200-600 B.C.
6 3/8 in. (300 grams, 16 cm high).
White ware globular jug with pinched trefoil mouth and strap handle to the rear; painted 'eye' detailing to mouth, serpent pattern to handle, hatched triangle motif to the body. [No Reserve]

Ex Peter Cran collection, Scotland, who worked as an engineer for the Cypriot public works department 1931-1946; thence by descent.

According to Howland, this type (33A), attested in the Athenian Agora during a period from the last quarter of the third century B.C. to the third quarter of the second century, is not well defined: ‘Its forms are irregular, not following a definite set pattern’. Specimens are also recorded in Magna Graecia (Paestum). -
