Chinese Wei Terracotta Brick
NORTHERN WEI, 386-534 A.D. OR LATER
13 in. (3.7 kg, 33 cm).
Rectangular in plan with recessed arch, figure modelled in the half-round of Buddha wearing a voluminous pleated robe extending to fill the lower part of the arch, mandorla to the rear.

Ex Hong Kong collection, 1980-1990.

Ceramic dog figures were used as a tomb-guardians, to protect the grave and its contents. -

The Bixi is a mythical beast, one of the nine sons of the Dragon King. The domed carapace of the beast was believed to represent the vault of the heavens while its lower shell represented the earth; the living flesh within represented humankind. -
