Chinese Tang Terracotta Polo Player
TANG DYNASTY, 618-907 A.D.
19 in. (6.5 kg total, 48 cm long).
The black horse in a dynamic pose with its legs extended, painted red harness and bridle and a light-coloured saddle blanket beneath the black saddle; female rider in a tight-fitting robe with long sleeves, her left arm held high preparing to swing the club and her right arm held close to the body for holding the reins; accompanied by a custom-made display stand.

'The Diana' was owned by Palmer and Co. a powerful Calcutta ship owner and was licenced by the English East India Company to sail from Calcutta or Madras to Canton. On the 14th of March 1817, she hit rocks off the Straits of Malacca and sank. The wreck was identified and recovered in 1994 by Dorian Ball of Malaysian Historical Salvors. -

The characteristic features related to maternity and parenthood were represented in figurines of pregnant females and of couples (mother and father) with a baby.
