Chinese Tang Terracotta Pair of Boys

TANG DYNASTY, 618-907 A.D. OR LATER

5 5 1/2 in. (1.2 kg total, 13-14 cm).

Both seated on the floor and wearing a long blue robe with red and ochre trims, and a black belt; one wearing a conical green cap and holding the stem of a lotus flower; the other with a shaven head except for a small tuft of hair on the top of the head, holding a large fruit(?) close to his body.     'The Diana' was owned by Palmer and Co. a powerful Calcutta ship owner and was licenced by the English East India Company to sail from Calcutta or Madras to Canton. On the 14th of March 1817, she hit rocks off the Straits of Malacca and sank. The wreck was identified and recovered in 1994 by Dorian Ball of Malaysian Historical Salvors.
