Chinese Tang Terracotta Camel
TANG DYNASTY, 618-907 A.D.
11 in. (4 kg, 28 cm high).
Bactrian camel modelled in the round in a kneeling pose on a polygonal base; saddle bags heavily laden with goods; semi-naturalistic anatomical and facial detailing, short tail held aloft; remains of polychrome painted pigment.

Accompanied by an original thermoluminescence analysis report no.C122k20 from Oxford Authentication.

The statue possibly depicts either bodhisattva Manjushri, the bodhisattva of wisdom, or bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. Both are often depicted sitting on a skin of lion, or on a lion, which represents their use of wisdom to control the mind. -
