Chinese Tang Bronze Horseman Pendant

CIRCA 5TH-7TH CENTURY A.D.

1 3/4 in. (12.2 grams, 43 mm).

Openwork pendant of a merchant horseman modelled in low relief with loop attached to the head, arms held at the lap, saddlecloth to the horse's back, sinuous curved tendrils beneath the horse's hooves. [No Reserve]

Acquired Portobello Road, London, in 1996.
From the personal collection of a West London, UK, gentleman.

    Ex West Country, UK, collection, 1980-1990s. Accompanied by a copy of a thermoluminescence test report issued by Laboratory Kotalla of Germany, report number 44CM110520.

    The use of foreign featured figurines in the Tang period showed the extent that the Dynasty drew on capabilities of the experts from the 'Silk Road' especially for horse and camel training.
