Unglazed terracotta mingqi symbolic guard dog, a chowchow in alert stance with head erect and ears pricked; integrally modelled harness to neck, shoulders and back; one paw repaired. 14.35 kg, 61 cm high
From a collection acquired on the UK art market from various auction houses and collections mostly before 2000. From an important Cambridgeshire estate; thence by descent. Accompanied by a thermoluminescence analysis report from Oxford Authentication no.C124d6. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by a search certificate number no.12153-214720.
Ceramic dog figures were used as a tomb-guardians, to protect the grave and its contents. -

Seated cross-legged in virasana on a lotus flower dais, hands in the Dharmachakra Mudra, wearing a samghati adorned with floral hem, his face with with downcast eyes below arched eyebrows, aquiline nose, with gentle smile, elongated earlobes, the tiered hair surmounted by a flame and with an elaborate diadem; collar, diadem armbands all with inset turquoise and other studs. 2.35 kg, 27 cm

Our specimen is probably a votive temple lamp. From the beginning, temples were centres of inspiration for the production of lamps in a variety of designs. Temple lamps played an important role in temple rituals. Rich people used to give donations of both money and land to craftsmen, who could then devote much of their time to producing such pieces of art.
