Chinese Ming Blue and White Jar with Peonies

LATE MING DYNASTY, 1368-1644 A.D.

6 1/2 in. (1.29 kg, 26.5 cm high).

Squat in profile with low foot and neck, horizontal bands of dark blue floral motifs on a pale blue field.

Provenance

From an important collection of terracotta pre 1988, London and Geneva.

    The Bixi is a mythical beast, one of the nine sons of the Dragon King. The domed carapace of the beast was believed to represent the vault of the heavens while its lower shell represented the earth; the living flesh within represented humankind.
