Composed of graduated polished carnelian beads of mainly biconical and annular form; hook-and-eye clasp. [No Reserve]
ProvenancePrivate U.K. family collection formed in the early 1970s.

Qajar Portrait of Naser al-Din Shah

Painted onto bone china in polychrome and gilt, showing the ruler facing, dressed in royal attire. 27 grams total, 64 mm high (82 x 82 mm including box)
Acquired by the vendor's father on the UK art market, before 1990.
Naser al-Din Shah Qajar was the fourth Shah of Qajar, and the third longest reigning ruler in Iranian history. He was assassinated in Tehran on 1st May 1896. He is known for being the first modern Persian monarch to have formally visited Europe and to have written about his travels in his memoirs. -

Comprising: a single-edged peasant iron dagger with reconstructed wooden handle; a Tudor iron knife with scale tang handle and a decorative pommel; an early type of iron fork (pricker) with reconstructed wooden handle. 633 grams total, knife: 14.5-42.5 cm

Knives with long wide blades would have been used at table for carving meat, but in difficult times they could be a proper weapon in the hand of common people. The practice to carrying knives for everyday use continued for many centuries. -
