Bactrian Style Bowl Fragment
20TH CENTURY A.D.
5 1/4 in. (132 grams, 13.5 cm).
Comprising a portion of the rim, silver-coloured metal short sidewall and base; rim with vine tendrils, leaves and bunches of grapes modelled in high-relief and extending into the bowl; base with a ring of right-facing male profile busts each within a pelletted hoop, and border of larger pellets below; underside abraded. [No Reserve]

Rebound as a hardback with full leather binding, central arabesque foliage panel to covers; 16 laid-paper page; title page with rectangular-red-ink frame and title blocks and panels of naskh text below a triangular panel of scrolled foliage ornament; text pages with red-framed rectangular blocks of black-ink text with red headers, occasional marginal notation, disc stamps to first and last pages. 171 grams, 14 x 23 cm

The text is the Book of Allibab al Maenari on Philosophy by the Philosopher Hussain bin Ali Al-Kashif Al-Baihaqi; once the property of Judge Ahmed Nazif in Belgrade in the 18th century A.D. -

Sassanian Chalcedony Seal with Bust and Inscription

Plano-convex seal with profile bust; accompanied by a copy of a scholarly note dated 4th August 1999 by A.D.H. (David) Bivar and a museum-quality impression: 'Sasanian Seal. About 4th to 5th century A.D. Greyish-brown chalcedony ellipsoid Sasanian portrait, r. Around, Pahlavi inscription wlwny ZY kwlyky Varūn ī Kōrīg 'V. who (is son) of K.' For the first name, the parallel Varīn is attested. For the second, we find Kōrīn as a parallel. these exact forms are previously unrecorded.' 10.9 grams, 25 mm

Bivar was a British numismatist and archaeologist, who was appointed Emeritus Professor of Iranian Studies at the SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies), University of London. Among his specialisms was the study of Sasanian seals and art.
