Archaic Cypriot Head of a Male Votary

Fragmentary head from a votive limestone figure of a male with long hair arranged inside a plain diadem above his forehead; the face with almond-shaped eyes sculpted in relief, arched eyebrows, and exhibiting the ‘archaic smile’; mounted on a display block.

Terracotta figurines of horse and rider were common grave offerings in Boeotia, northwest of Attica, particularly during the 6th century B.C. Representations of warriors on horseback were already widespread in the Geometric Period, and widely used in Cyprus, during this period. -
