8TH-9TH CENTURY A.D.

2 in. (4.5 grams, 49 mm).

Plate brooch with integral catch and stub of the pin to one end; border enclosing a dense panel of 'Mercian Style' foliage in high-relief with central stud nd saltire. [No Reserve]

    Found Seaham, Co Durham, UK. Property of a Durham private collector. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate number no.12924-245112.

    The brooch seems to belong to the group IV of the great squared brooches. Usually, they have a large 'rampant beast' in the footplate upper borders, and a large mask in the terminal lobe, of rather more varying pattern.

    Openwork appliqué comprising a horizontal panel with chip-carved undulating bar, above, the arched neck of a bird with hooked beak and circular cell for the eye, the beak connected to a vertical claw; beneath, body curved into a loop with the leg joining the median panel below the claw, lateral pierced attachment spur; eye with calcareous fill. 3.27 grams, 40 mm



    Found Bishopstone, Seaford, Lewes, East Sussex, UK, in 2023. Accompanied by a copy of the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report no.SUSS-33C6E1.
