Anglo-Saxon Gilt Bronze Garnet Jewelled Great Square-Headed Brooch
525-575 A.D.
7/8 - 1 5/8 in. (68.16 grams total, 22-41 mm).
Fragments comprising: rectangular headplate with raised bands separating the zones of Salin Style I and other ornament, shallow bow with three vertical raised ribs, lozengiform footplate with lateral lappets and lobes, central cell with inset garnet cloison; the brooch of Hines Group XXII. [8]
ProvenanceFound whilst searching with a metal detector in Brompton-on-Swale and Scorton, Richmondshire, North Yorkshire, UK, on 8 November 2014; declared as 'not treasure' under Treasure reference no.2015 T386, and returned to the finder.
Accompanied by a copy of the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report no.DUR-353A49.

Of broken kite shape with two foliate designs below running to the narrow hook, all features outlined by heavy groove infilled with niello, single piercing above. 0.68 grams, 20 mm
Found whilst searching with a metal detector by Robin Sykes at Sutton in the Forest, Yorkshire, UK, on Monday 17 November 2003, recorded as Treasure by the finder and disclaimed by the Crown with Treasure Reference no.2004 T50. From the private collection of Robin Sykes, Yorkshire, UK, formed since the late 1990s. Accompanied by a copy of the Treasure Report by the Curator of Anglo-Saxon Collections, Department of Prehistory and Europe, at the British Museum. Hooked tags were used for fastening a variety of dress articles, including garters. The present example is unusual in its shape, decoration and for having only a single piercing. -

With a deep flange, chamfered inner ridge and wavy line, second chamfered edge with a high-relief five pointed star within a multiple stranded border surrounding a central rivetted boss, remains of catchplate and pin-lug to verso; rare with composite boss. 20 grams, 18 mm

Saucer brooches are a female Saxon fashion, contemporary with the Anglian penannular and cruciform types, normally worn at the shoulders to secure a tubular dress. -
