5/8 in. (7.1 grams, 16 mm).

Haematite with a seated bearded male figure in long robes and cap, hand held up and holding a cup, crescent moon above; to the front a male deity wearing long robes and a horned cap leading a male figure by the hand, male in long robes and hand held to mouth; behind a male figure in long robes and arms crossed over chest, rectangular panel with three columns of cuneiform text. [No Reserve]

    Animal-headed creatures are often winged bird-headed figures with human body in the Urartu and Northern-Syrian seals of ‘dnplţ ‘bd ‘mndb type, but often winged, apparently ibex-headed figures appear on the seals of the type bqšt bt ‘bdyrh. The ibex-headed figures might belong to same group of semi-divine beings visible on the Assyrian art.

    From a collection acquired on the UK art market from various auction houses and collections mostly before 2000. From an important Cambridgeshire estate; thence by descent.

    The later (2nd -3rd century A.D.) Rabbinic tradition emphasised the difference between the permanent mortar (makhtesh kevua) and the movable one (makhtesh metaltelet), with the first being automatically sold with the house, but the second sold only if expressly stated by the vendor. This form of movable mortar was common in the Levant throughout the second half of the 1st millennium B.C.
