Western Asiatic Terracotta Jar Handle with Mamshat Royal Stamp

1ST MILLENNIUM B.C.

4 3/4 in. (251 grams, 12 cm).

A large handle from a Tufnell type 484 jar, oval seal impression above the handle depicting a schematic winged sun disc, inscription 'Imlk / mmšt' for 'belonging (or) for the king (city of) Mamshat'.

Provenance

Acquired 1970-1999.
London collection of the late Mr S.M., thence by descent.

Accompanied by a copy of a description from Peter Gert Van der Veen, senior lecturer of Levantine Archaeology Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz.
