Western Asiatic Stone Cylinder Seal Group

4TH-1ST MILLENNIUM B.C.

3/4 - 1 1/4 in. (28.7 grams total, 18-32 mm).

Comprising: frieze with three robed figures flanking a hatched column; two ibexes contending with looped necks, standing bird behind; deeply cut linear image of rearing ibexes; shallow-cut image of a hero with raised arm fending off a winged gryphon, star in the field; frieze with facing hero wrestling two rearing beasts; each supplied with a museum-quality impression. [5, No Reserve]

Provenance

From the private collection of a European gentleman (1942-2024), formed since the 1970s.

    Specialised collection of cuneiform texts, the property of a London gentleman and housed in London before 1992. Thence by descent to family members. Examined by Professor Wilfrid George Lambert FBA (1926-2011), historian, archaeologist, and specialist in Assyriology and Near Eastern archaeology, in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This small collection is exceptional for the variety of types, including some very rare and well-preserved examples.
