LOT 1739

Western Asiatic Bronze Arrowhead Collection

2ND-1ST MILLENNIUM B.C.

3 1/8 - 8 1/8 in. (309 grams total, 8-20.7 cm).

Comprising eleven tanged triangular arrowheads, most with a raised midrib, and a tanged javelin head. [12]

Provenance

London, UK, collection, 1990s.

Literature

Cf. Muscarella, O.W., Bronze and Iron Ancient Near Eastern Artifacts in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1988, pp.289ff, nos. 396, 407; for some similar arrow and javelin heads; Khorasani, M.M., Arms and Armour from Iran. The Bronze Age to the End of the Qajar Period, Tübingen, 2006, figures 463,470, for one type.

Footnotes

Most of these blades are bipartite, but the definition of the bipartite type is not absolute, as it brings together weapons of very different and unrelated designs. In fact, some weapons do not have a sufficiently characteristic shape to be interpreted as a javelin or long arrowhead.
