Western Asiatic Black Stone Recumbent Bull

1ST MILLENNIUM B.C. OR LATER

2 1/4 in. (86 grams, 59 mm).

Carved in the round with its legs tucked underneath the body, stylised head with large almond-shaped eyes and incised details to the muzzle, large hump to the neck.

Provenance

From a collection formed before 1988, London and Geneva.

    Acquired 1980-2015. Ex Abelita family collection. This lot has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database, and is accompanied by an illustrated lot declaration signed by the Head of the Antiquities Department, Dr Raffaele D'Amato.

    The spearhead belongs to type VI of the Khorasani classification, with long blade and a short tang. These kind of spearheads, like the type 2 from Amlash, show the presence of two fastening rivets at their base. A similar piece is kept in the National Museum of Iran, and another was excavated by Dr. Negahban in Marlik (Tomb 12, Trench XIIE).
