Viking Sword with Inlaid Silver Decorated Hilt
9TH-10TH CENTURY AD
35 1/2" (755 grams, 90.5cm).
A two-edged iron sword of Type X comprising a broad, flat blade with rounded point, gently curved lower guard with inlaid silver interlace pattern to one face and traces of similar to the reverse, broad tang tapering towards the pommel; tea-cosy pommel with traces of linear silver inlay.
Provenance
From the family collection of a South East London collector; formerly acquired in the late 1950s; accompanied by a metallurgic analytical report written by Metallurgist Dr. Brian Gilmour of the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, University of Oxford, report number 134791.
