Viking Lead Trade Weight with Gilt-Bronze Insert Panel
8TH CENTURY AD
2 1/4" (275 grams, 56 mm).
A thick triangular weight with gilt-bronze panel to the upper face, decorated in Insular Style; the lead weight roughly cast with lip to the upper edges; the panel triangular, displaying a serpentine creature with spiral shoulder and hip reserved against a field of chip-carved diaperwork.

The weight of the block is 275 grams, equal to eleven øre of 25 grams. The gilt-bronze panel was probably cut from an Irish bell-shrine or similar ecclesiastical treasure, and added to the weight for ease of identification.
