Viking Inspired Bronze Omega Penannular Brooch

CIRCA 13TH CENTURY A.D.

2 1/8 in. (10.6 grams, 55 mm).

Of Mordvinian type comprising a round-section hoop and two trapezoidal plate finials each with a geometric design of granulation; remains of round-section pin coiled to the hoop. [No Reserve]

Acquired before 1980.
Ex property of a London collector.
Acquired on the UK art market in 2013.

    Similar bracelets were found in pairs on the remains of the left forearm bones of a female, in grave 83 of Hemlanden cemetery in Birka. These bracelets, as visible in this grave, were usually worn in pairs on both arms.

    From the collection of a North American gentleman, formed in the 1990s.

    A similar knife can be seen in a female grave from Tuukkala, Mikkeli, Finland, still with its blade and housed in a magnificent bronze openwork scabbard. Knives were used by men and women in many different ways, including for war.
