Viking Elaborate Silver-Gilt Trefoil Brooch
9TH CENTURY A.D.
2 1/4 in. (17.3 grams, 58 mm).
The three arms with rounded terminals and domed outer face; the filigree interlace motif embellished with granulations and larger pellets, highly stylised dragonesque heads with slanted eyes and curled moustaches facing outwards from the end of each arm; reverse slightly concave, featuring a pin lug and catchplate, together with two articulate suspension loops. [No Reserve]

A similar bracelet in bronze, with deep wavy furrows and stamped rows of circles, was found in grave 1081 of the Birka Necropolis. It was a female grave, and the diameter/length of the bracelet (73mm) corresponds to the 70mm of our specimen. These bracelets, as visible in the grave, were usually worn as a pair on both arms. -

From the collection of a North American gentleman, formed in the 1990s.
The bracelet finds comparison with those of the Proto-Baltic Finnic Culture. In the Pre-Viking and Viking ages, later forms of this bracelet type were used in Baltic lands mainly in north-western Estonia, Virumaa, Järvamaa, and northern Tartumaa. The latest bracelets of this type, from the 9th century, display a longitudinal groove on their terminals. All bracelets with thickening terminals have been usually found in burials, hoards, or as stray finds. -

The pin finial formed with a round-section stem and facetted head, each of four faces displaying a punched ring-and-dot motif; a zoomorphic strap end terminal, formed as a beast in relief, possibly Romanesque. 6.28 grams total, 20-21 mm
