RELATED LOTS

Viking Age Iron Socketted Bearded Axehead
Circa 10th-11th century A.D.Sold for (Inc. bp): £468
Finely curved, broad blade with a chin to the lower edge, a rounded socket with lateral triangular extensions; professionally cleaned, conserved, and restored. 411 grams, 18.5 cm
From the family collection of a South East London collector; formerly acquired in the late 1950s.
This type of bearded axe seems to correspond to the E2 category of the Viking axe classification, but also has affinity with the Slavic axes of type Y. Usually, these bearded axeheads (skeggöks) had a longer edge, designed to split tree trunks into planks and beams. Some of the bearded axes were known as halfÞynna öx; the neck on such a 'half thin axe' was thinly forged, to make it lighter. -
Viking Age Gold Pendant with Amber
9th-11th century A.D.Estimate: £800 - 1,000 (+bp*)
Opening Bid: £400
A flat discoid pendant with pelletted border, raised bezel to the centre with a pelletted border and an amber insert; applied attachment loop to the top, some repairs. 4 grams, 24 mm
Acquired on the UK art market before 2000. Property of an Essex, UK, gentleman. -
Viking Age Bronze Ring with Horse
9th century A.D.Sold for (Inc. bp): £65
D-section hoop with a lentoid bezel with an incuse image of a stylised horse walking left. 4.64 grams, 20.76 mm overall, 14.23 mm internal diameter (approximate size British F 1/2, USA 3, Europe 4.3, Japan 4)
Acquired on the UK and EU art market before 2000. From the private collection of a Surrey, UK, gentleman.
This category of rings shows a combination of Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian animal ornaments. They derived from the Selkirk ring, with a speckled, backwards-biting animal inside an ovoid bezel. This style seems to be typically Nordic, and the size of the ring suggests a child's ring.
