Viking Age Decorated Silver Penannular Brooch
12TH CENTURY A.D.
1 3/4 in. (14.4 grams, 46 mm).
Featuring domed terminals with apex granules and dense interlace and pellet decoration in relief, punched decoration to the free-running pin head.
ProvenanceFrom the collection of a North American gentleman, formed in the 1990s.

FootnotesPenannular brooches with facetted terminals were part of the famous Kostivere hoard, found in Estonia, deposited in around 1220-1230 during the wars of Estonians against the Germans and Danes. The annular brooches with animal ornament in Urnes style were considered by the archaeologists definitely Scandinavian, more specifically from Gotland.

Square in plan with a convex underside and domed upper face, decorated with symmetrical scrolling vegetation in raised relief; pin lug and catchplate to reverse. 19.08 grams, 33 mm
Fine condition.
Acquired in the 1980s-1990s. Ex an important central London gallery, London W1.
These kind of appliques were used for belts, harnesses, quivers, saddles and various other Rus and Steppe warrior fittings. -

Merovingian Gold Cloisonne Pendant

In the shape of a beetle(?) with a flat surface on one side, and divided on the other side by five spaces intended for cloisonne insertions; small loop for suspension in the upper part. 0.68 grams, 15 mm
From a late Japanese specialist collector, 1970-2000s.
The cloisonne decoration, probably of Constantinopolitan origin, became an object of local production in the Merovingian kingdom since the 6th century A.D. Decorative objects of this type are common in female and male tombs, intended for the ornamentation of belts and household objects, arms and clothing. -

Of triangular form with integral suspension loop, the face delineated using granules to form almond-shaped eyes beneath eyebrows, concentric chevrons to the nasal line; applied granules and straps to the loop. 1.79 grams, 26 mm
