Viking Age Decorated Bronze Key

9TH-11TH CENTURY A.D.

4 1/2 in. (43.8 grams, 11.6 cm).

Comprising a round-section tapering shank with ribbed collar to each end; polyhedral block to each end, quatrefoil bit with openwork design, pierced suspension lug. [No Reserve]

    The more commonly used weapons of the Finno-Ugrian people were axes, commonly found in all Finnic areas, as well as spears. Iron axeheads of this typology show a sub-trapezoidal asymmetrical blade, often perforated through the centre.

    Found near Sleaford, Lincolnshire, UK. Recorded with Lincolnshire Finds Liason Officer (FLO) for the Portable Antiquities Scheme and returned to the finder.

    Believed to be of a Dark Age date or older, but undiagnostic, however XRF analysis suggests an ancient date is probable: Au 72.5, Ag 15.0, Cu 7.8, Fe 4.6, Zn 0.1.
