Viking Age Bronze Purse Fitting

CIRCA 9TH-11TH CENTURY A.D.

4 1/4 in. (45 grams, 10.8 cm).

Crescentic in plan with a triangular cross-section, both faces displaying panels of lozenges, each with a punched annulet to centre; piercing to one arm. [No Reserve]

    The mount is an extremely early example of the so-called 'sword pyramid' mount which was used in the Vendel period as part of the sword-suspension system. It has a parallel in the find from Sandby Borg, Oland, Sweden where Style I masks also appear.

    Comprising: one mount accompanied by a Portable Antiquities Scheme record, the mount of Anglo-Scandinavian type of Williams' Class A Type 11, triangular in plan with rivet hole to apex displaying a rampant beast two occluded rivet holes below, lip to reverse; a lozengiform type with pellet ornament; a second howling beast type with occluded lower rivet holes and absent apex. 49.3 grams, 32-43 mm



    Found Berkshire, UK. Accompanied by a copy of the British Museum's Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report no.BERK-6F9608.
