Viking Age Bronze Decorated Bracelet

9TH-11TH CENTURY A.D.

2 5/8 in. (66 grams, 38 mm).

With a reversed C-shaped body tapering towards the terminals, geometric ornament in relief including lozenges and pecking; terminals absent. [No Reserve]

From the collection of a North American gentleman, formed in the 1990s.

Cf. Arbman, H., Birka I: Die Gräber, Uppsala, 1940, p.18, volume I, fragment of similar bracelet from grave 47, and bracelet from Hedesunda (Gästrikland).

Footnotes

Similar bracelets were found usually in female graves in the Hemlanden cemetery in Birka. Sometimes they were found in pairs, sometimes worn only on the right arm. Their main characteristic was the geometric decoration engraved on the surface.

    In a private German collection since the 1980s. Property of a gentleman; acquired on the UK art market in 1998. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate no.11007-181733.
