6TH-11TH CENTURY A.D.
1 - 1 3/4 in. (42.6 grams, 25-44 mm).
Comprising: a domed mount with a pounced fantastical sea creature in low relief, the head modelled in raised relief; equal-arm brooch with central flower head flanked by scrolled crosses, vertical ribs between, remains of pin lug and catchplate to reverse; mount with trefoil finial and possible zoomorphic scheme. Ornamented bronze knife handles became an integral part of medieval culture also in Finno-Ugric lands. The blades of the knives were in iron, with bronze handles, and had an oval cross-section slightly expanding upwards. In a certain number of female burials, knives were found in sheaths with a bronze lamellar lining, decorated with complex floral ornamentation. -
