Plano-convex in section with segmented carapace and longitudinal piercing; underside with dense eight-line hieroglyphic text.

Egyptian Cartonnage Section with Eye and Wing

Sub-rectangular in plan with irregular and fragmented edge; prepared plaster surface featuring a line-bordered column with four cursive hieroglyphs naming Behedet (bḥdt); a section of finely painted outstretched wing with feather detailing to lower edge in red and blue; below, a wedjat eye in black with red medial band; fabric back to reverse. 48 grams, 17 cm

This fragment most likely originates from the lower chest section of a so-called anthropoid 'yellow coffin' from the Third Intermediate Period. The wing belongs to a protective deity; as Behedet is a name given to several locations (Edfu, Tell el-Balamun, and Lepidotonpolis) associated with Horus, it seems probable that the wing belongs to the falcon form of this god. -
Egyptian Steatite Scarab Group
Mainly Second Intermediate Period–New Kingdom, circa 1660-1069 B.C.Sold for (Inc. bp): £286
Designs include: a tripartite design with ankh, water, nwb, and men signs, with indistinct cartouches possibly of Thutmose III, and signs spelling the phrase 'powerful is the justice of Re' (user-Maat-Re); a line border enclosing the stylised depiction of a striding figure grasping a crocodile, with a neb sign below; a line border enclosing a multitude of signs, including Thutmose III’s throne name (men-kheper-Re), and that of Amun; A line border enclosing central Hathoric sistrum; a line border enclosing a symmetrical motif in contrasting black glaze. 10.6 grams total, 13-19 mm
