Very Large French Stone Age Knapped Flint Axe Head
NEOLITHIC PERIOD, CIRCA 6000 B.P.
7 3/4 in. (1.15 kg, 19.6 cm).
Knapped as an irregular rectangle with a large area of cortex to one face, chamfered cutting edge; inked 'NC' legend. [No Reserve]

From the Dordogne area of France.
Acquired in the 1970s-1990s.
From the collection of the famous UK musician and amateur archaeologist, Victor Brox (1941-2023).
Acquired on the UK art market at auction after being sold by Mr Brox’s family.

These axes, usually of black fine-grained rock, are mostly of Swedish or Norwegian origin. The asymmetrical lentoid cross-section is flattened towards the cutting edge. -
