Very Large Akkadian Stone Cylinder Seal with Sun-god Shamash
2350-2150 B.C.
1 3/8 in. (30.18 grams, 35 mm).
With low-relief journey scenes: Shamash returning from the underworld; Shamash between mountains and Gates of Heaven, possibly some re-engraving.
Provenance
Ex 'S' collection, London, UK.
Examined by Professor Wilfrid George Lambert FBA (1926-2011), historian, archaeologist, and specialist in Assyriology and Near Eastern archaeology, in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Accompanied by a copy of a previous illustrated catalogue page.
This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by a search certificate number no.12419-225429.
