Valentinian I AV Solidus. AD 367-375. Treveri mint. 2nd officina.
D N VALENTINIANVS P F AVG, diademed and cuirassed bust to left, wearing helmet decorated with stars, holding spear and shield decorated with horseman motif / VICTORE S AVGVSTI, Valentinian and Gratian seated facing, holding globe between them, Victory flying to left above crowning them; TR◂OB (Treveris in Officina Secunda) in exergue. RIC IX 16b; Cohen 39; Depeyrot 36/1. Extremely Fine. Slightly wavy flan. Very Rare and one of the finest known examples.(4.49gr, 20mm, 12h.).

During the 4th century the urban life in Britain was in serious decline and the supplies of currency from the Empire temporarily disrupted, so the local imitations of Constantius II and the usurper Magnentius became necessary to cover the deficit. -
