LOT 259

Tudor Henry VIII - Canterbury - Farthing

1537-1538 AD, Second Coinage, Canterbury mint. Obv: portcullis with RUTILANS ROSA legend with saltire stop and 'catherine wheel' mintmark. Rev: rose over long cross with DEO GRACIAS legend. Good very fine, slightly flat at mintmark, extremely rare and attractive.(0.17 grams.).

Literature

S. 2362; N. 1822/2.

Footnotes

Although not fully struck up, the mintmark shows clear affinity with the 'Catherine's wheel' mark for Canterbury. For the rose reverse type, the only other mark recorded is the 'arrow' at London. The 'rose', 'lis' and 'sunburst' marks are used at London for the plain cross reverse type but the form of these does not seem to correspond with this example.
