LOWER PALAEOLITHIC PERIOD, 450,000-280,000 B.P.

4 1/4 in. (220 grams, 10.8 cm).

Irregular in plan, water-worn with much cortex in situ, broad cutting edge; inked legend 'P2'. [No Reserve]

Found 410 Building, Westcott, Buckinghamshire, UK, 1970.
From the private collection of Kenneth Machin (1936-2020), Buckinghamshire, UK; with collection no.P2; his collection of antiquities and natural history was formed since 1948; thence by descent.

    Found Niger, North Africa. From an old Paris collection. Acquired on the European art market. From the private collection of an East Anglian, UK, specialist collector.     Very well preserved with a deep green patina from being exposed for a period of time to the sun and sand storms of North Africa.

    Symmetrically worked flint handaxe with traces of retouching on both surfaces; lanceolate shape with narrow butt, rounded edge, roughly tooled working edges; old inked inscription "Pressigny / Le Grand/ Le Carroi". 102 grams, 12.7 cm (294 grams total, 16 cm including stand)
