A rhyolite funerary idol with bulbous head and body, low-relief facial features, arms forming a horizontal band; traces of red pigment. [No Reserve]
ProvenanceEx property of a South East Asia collector; formerly acquired on the Asian art market before 2000.
From the private collection of John Meredith, acquired since the 1990s; thence by descent.

日本万古 Which translates to: “Japan Banko” This is a reference to Banko ware (Banko-yaki / 萬古焼), a type of traditional Japanese stoneware that originated in the 18th century in Yokkaichi, Mie Prefecture. It is especially known for its teapots, cooking vessels, and unglazed pottery. “日本” (Nihon) = Japan “万古” (Banko) = Banko ware, literally meaning “eternity” or “ten thousand ages”. -

Her broad array of associations made her one of the most important deities and in the guise of Shri, she is considered a goddess personifying a diverse range of talents and powers. -
